Dr. Simon Bartold presented new research on osteochondroses growth injuries in children on Fit Foot U. Ben Pearl, DPM moderated the interview. Three key points were reviewed. First, children have transient osteopenia in pre-puberty which results in more risk for osteochondroses injuries during that period. Second, new data shows that osteochondroses injuries are site-, gender-, and age-specific; and some can carry over into adulthood. Finally, physical maturity can be more important than the age of children when considering the overload forces that can cause injury.

Dr. Pearl added that this highlights the importance of nutrition such as vitamin D levels and the potential for stimulating bone with electromagnetic therapy during these injury-prone periods. Appropriate loading and sports selection are paramount for children's sports participation.
