CONSIDER ADHERENCE TO THERAPEUTIC DIABETIC FOOTWEAR

Footwear design is something to consider for women with diabetes mellitus. In a study conducted by Jarl and colleagues, women were shown to have worse diabetic health than men. Women were found to dislike the shoes due to the large size and unfeminine appearance and also had negative attitudes to the appearance and price of therapeutic footwear. In the study, both men and women were found to dislike therapeutic shoes but did agree they were more comfortable in practical use. Patients were also found to only be using the therapeutic shoes outdoors but need to adhere to wearing it indoors as well as this is where most of the walking occurs.
Footwear design and adherence to therapeutic diabetic footwear run hand and hand as therapeutic footwear will help decrease chances of foot ulceration and heal ulcers and prevent future ulcers. However, footwear design is important as well as individuals may not use these devices if they do not like the appearance.
