CORNS VS CALLUSES AND HOW TO TREAT THEM

Corns, medially known as "heloma durums" occur on the feet due to pressure mostly due to biomechanical reasons. Corns are a thickening of your epidermis which occur as a protection mechanism by the body however sometimes they can become pathological and cause pain/discomfort. Corns can form in between the toes, on top of the toes and sometimes on the bottom of the feet. Corns tend to be smaller in size but cause increased focal pressure in a localized region. Often described by patients as "stepping on a rock or stone".

Calluses on the other hand are medically known as "hyperkeratosis" and form a more diffuse thickening of the epidermis over a larger area with less pressure. These occur due to pressure and biomechanical reasons as well such as bunions, restriction motion in the joints, plantarflexed metatarsal heads, high arched foot types etc. When calluses become pathological they can cause a lot of pain/discomfort.

Treatment usually consists of routine debridement, offloading with padding and orthotics, change in footwear, and regular emollient application.
