PEDIATRIC FEET AND HEEL PAIN
posted: Sep. 01, 2020.
Heel pain in children is often caused by repetitive stress on the growth plate in the heel bone (calcaneus). The growth plate allows childrens bones to mature, the growth plate in the heel is known as the calcaneal apophysis. This growth plate does not close until 14 years old, and if there is stress on the area it can lead to inflammation and pain in the back and bottom of the heels. This condition, known as Sever's disease, is common in active children from 8-14 years old.
Overuse from mechanical stress, such as: sports, jumping, improper footwear etc can lead to pain and discomfort at the heel.
Sever's disease is mostly treated with rest, ice, padding, footwear education, stretching/exercising and even a custom pair of orthotics.
