What are sesamoids?
Sesamoids are two bones that are located right under your first metatarsal head. They sit within the flexor hallucis brevis tendon and help to absorb and redistribute weight bearing surfaces. When walking, the sesamoids will move forward to stabilize and protect the metatarsal head.
What is sesamoiditis?
Sesamoiditis is when there is inflammation and pain beneath the metatarsal head of the first toe. Sesamoiditis can be caused by overloading the sesamoiditis such as within strenuous activities and exercises as well as high impact activities. Some activities that can aggravate the sesamoids include: running, ballet dancing but they can also be aggravated by overuse of high heels and having a high arched foot type.
Treatment
Treatment of sesamoidits usually includes: ice massage, antiinflammatory medications (NSAIDs), cortisone injections, low level laser therapy, custom orthotics and footwear education.
