WHEN HEEL PAIN IS NOT PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Often times, clinicians will label heel pain as plantar fasciitis however, there are many other things it can be. Heel pain can occur from different types of arthritis, vascular impairment, gout or even neuropathy.

Gout often times affects the first metatarsophalangeal joint in the foot however, it can still affect other bones/joints as well. Gout is a systemic disease that can be brought upon by poor diet, alcohol abuse, renal failure, high blood pressure and medications.

Vascular impairment can also be a reason for this pain, occlusive claudication of the distal portion of the popliteral artery can cause heel pain. Claudication can occur through smoking, damage to the artery or blockages.

Neuropathy is another etiology for heel pain, especially in diabetics, usually this will be addressed in the appointment and neurological examinations can help identify if there are any issues with the nerves.

If you or a loved one is suffering from heel pain, make sure to book an appointment to have it fully assessed in order to treat the issue directly.
