BIOMECHANICAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH SKATING

Skating is a fun winter activity however, it can cause some problems in the feet due to the nature of the sport, the tight footwear and the increase in activity/exercise. Skates are made to fit snug in order to help support the leg and the foot during the activity in order to help increase speed and reduce injuries.

Due to the tight/narrow footwear, some individuals with wider/flat feet may experience a neuroma due to the tight nature of the skate. It has been found that the tight fit can increase the incidence of Morton's neuroma specifically and compression neuropathies.

Other individuals, who have hammer toes and bunions often complain of pain while wearing the tight skates. Skates can be made more comfortable however with heel lifts, accommodative felt padding and expanding the front of the skate or the back of the skate to accommodate for bony deformities. Speak to a Chiropodist today to see if this will be helpful for you!
