Portland Trail Blazer Rodney Hood ruptured his Achilles in Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers when coming down for a rebound, landing on his left foot with his toes pulled back against his shin. This position maximally and suddenly loaded the Achilles and tested its integrity. Given Hood’s age and athletic ability, he will likely undergo surgery as soon as possible so he can begin the long rehab road to recovery.

“An acute rupture of the Achilles tendon (less than six weeks ago) is best treated with surgery in a young, active person,” says Jason Keeler, DPM, a West Linn foot and ankle surgeon. “Following a rupture, the ends of the tendon can often be brought back together with surgery. After surgery, patients are often placed in a cast that allows the tendon to fully heal and regain strength. If an adequate amount of time is not given to this part of the recovery, the repair site can fail and a re-rupture could happen. Once the cast is removed, physical therapy is used to ensure proper return of strength and function. Increased scar tissue and/or weakness can occur if rehabilitation is not appropriate.”
