Scott Neville, DPM, a podiatrist in Mooresville, IN, says that for some people, pain and swelling in the foot can be a sign of gout. "[Gout is] a type of painful inflammatory arthritis caused by too much uric acid in the blood," Dr. Neville explains. "Tophi—which are uric acid crystal deposits that look like lumps under the skin—commonly develop [in the feet], although they can [also] be found in joints throughout the body."

In many cases, gout can be managed by standard therapies and lifestyle changes. However, some people suffer from uncontrolled gout, which can cause long-term damage.
