ALMOST ALL DIABETIC FOOT PROBLEMS CAN BE PREVENTED

Podiatrist, Dr. Kenneth B. Rehm states, "diabetes involves the feet by causing problems with nerves, circulation, muscles, joints, and infections. Diabetes can also cause a frightening condition: numbness that masks the detection of important symptoms. Many diabetic patients have peripheral neuropathy in their feet.  Neuropathy shows up in many different ways, as dry skin, toenail problems, or loss of sensation. But the problem is that a lot of people with diabetes don’t realize their feet have gone numb. Patients with diabetes must be vigilant.  If they take care of their feet, they don’t have to lose their feet or legs. Trouble doesn’t have to happen. Almost all diabetic foot problems can be prevented, if they’re caught early enough."

Toronto foot clinic, Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics has been managing diabetic patients with great success since 1980.  We take great care in educating our diabetic foot patients in the do's and don't's in order to keep their feet healthy.

Last year in Ontario over 1700 patients had their foot amputated due to complications of diabetes.  The unfortunate part about this disturbing statistic is that 85% of these amputations were avoidable if the patients were receiving regular foot care.  The average life expectancy for a patient who had a foot amputation was 2 years.
