REGULAR PODIATRIC VISITS BY DIABETICS REDUCE RISK OF AMPUTATION

People walk all over them and usually think nothing of it. They’re the feet, and its important to show some respect, local foot doctors said. “We have 26 bones in each foot,” said Dr. Edward Prikaszczikow. “If you add both feet, almost one-fourth of all the bones in the human body are in the feet. It’s a very complex structure.” “They’re put to work every day,” added Dr. Eric Palmquist. “We take them for granted.”

Proper foot care is extremely important for diabetics, particularly those suffering with ulcers. According to Prikaszczikow, calluses, if not cared for, can lead to ulcer infection, leading to potentially serious problems, including leg amputation. “Visiting a podiatrist or chiropodist (foot specialist) once a year can reduce the potential for amputation because we can identify risk factors,” he said.
