RAYNAUD'S DISEASE AND PHENOMENON - CAUSES AND TREATMENT

What is Raynaud's Disease and Phenomenon?

Raynaud's phenomenon is a disorder of the blood vessels, usually in the fingers and toes. This is characterized by digital skin turning white due to lack of blood flow which also results in paraesthesia (numbness) which could possibly be followed by cyanosis. Lastly, the toes and finger tips become red, warm and throb as the blood flows back into the extremities.

Raynaud's syndrome/disease is a repeated presentation of the phenomenon described above however it is associated with a trigger such as coldness or stress/anxiety.

Treatment

Treatment for Raynaud's may include drugs to keep the blood vessels open. There are also simple things you can do yourself, such as

  • Soaking hands or feet in warm water at the first sign of an attack
  • Keeping your hands and feet warm in cold weather
  • Avoiding triggers, such as certain medicines and stress
  • Seeking out a psychiatrist/psychologist for help in dealing with certain stressors and anxiety
