Plantar fasciitis is a condition in which the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot gets irritated. This can occur due to many factors including a high arched foot, a flat foot and improper foot wear. Plantar fasciitis can be debilitating and can affect an individuals day to day living, their motivation, their occupation and their over all lifestyle. Some tips are tricks when buying footwear to help prevent and alleviate the pain associated with plantar fasciitis include: a deep heel cup, a firm heel cup, a flared heel, good cushioning and arch support.
A deep heel cup can help stabilize the ankle joint and prevent it from turning in or outwards which will help with excessive pronation.
A firm heel cup with also help to stabilize the rear foot and prevent it from slipping/sliding around in the shoe.
Good cushioning is also important in footwear as it will help with shock absorption and help offload the heel during daily activities of walking or running for exercise.
Lastly, good arch support is of the most importance. Plantar fasciitis usually occurs in a pes planus/flat foot type and good arch support can help prevent over stretching of the plantar fascia which usually results in inflammation and pain.
Using these tips and tricks when purchasing shoes can help make the world of a difference and help you put your best foot forward!
