The Times-Union is honored to have large numbers of smart and talented readers. Through its Email Interactive Group, it offers them a chance to participate. A great example came with a letter from Earl Horowitz, DPM, a specialist in geriatric and general podiatry. He wrote a letter about seniors and the dangers of walking. He first noted that senior citizen years can be divided into three categories: 60-75, 76-85, and 86 and up. As seniors age, they become prone to falls, which are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for seniors and tend to lead to a lower quality of life.

Dr. Horowitz offers several great low-cost ideas: • All public and exposed staircases painted yellow, a caution indicator. • Curbs at the corners of sidewalks also should be painted yellow. • All corner sidewalks should be depressed so wheelchairs and seniors walking with canes can easily move from sidewalks to streets.
