FDA PROPOSES BAN ON POWDERED MEDICAL GLOVES

AFTER SIGNALLING ITS INTENTIONS FOR YEARS, THE U.S. FOOT AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) HAS UNVEILED A PROPOSAL TO BAN MOST POWDERED MEDICAL GLOVES TO GUARD AGAINST MULTIPLE HEALTH THREATS TO CLINICIANS ALIKE.  THE PROPOSED BAN APPLIES TO POWDERED SURGEONS' GLOVES AND THE ABSORBABLE POWDER FOR LUBRICATING THEM, AS WELL AS POWDERED GLOVES FOR PATIENT EXAMINATIONS.  BOTH SYNTHETIC GLOVES AND THOSE MANUFACTURED FROM NATURAL RUBBER LATEX (NRL) ARE COVERED.

IF MADE FINAL, THE BAN WOULD HASTEN A PHASE-OUT OF POWDERED GLOVES ALREADY OCCURRING IN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY.  MAJOR HEALTH SYSTEMS SUCH AS CLEVELAND CLINIC AND JOHN HOPKINS MEDICINE HAVE EITHER RESTRICTED OR FORBIDDEN THE USE OF THESE GLOVES, A MOVE AFFIRMED BY SEVERAL MEDICAL SOCIETIES, ACCORDING TO THE FDA. AN ESTIMATED 93% OF CLINICIANS ARE PUTTING ON POWDER-FREE VERSIONS.

AT TORONTO FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS WE HAVE NEVER USED THESE POWDERED GLOVES.  IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE REQUIRES HIGH QUALITY, PROFESSIONAL ADVICE, FOOT CARE OR CUSTOM ORTHOTICS, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT US AT 416-465-8737.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY DR. JOHN A. HARDY, OWNER OF ACADEMY FOOT AND ORTHOTIC CLINICS.
