Headed for a workout? Don’t forget your feet and ankles. When it comes to exercising, these body parts are often overlooked. Feet and ankles are crucial for stretching and mobility, said Joshua L. Moore, DPM, associate professor in the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. “Many people neglect the feet and lower extremity with stretching exercises and mobility exercises, which ultimately may lead to pain, inflammation, and injuries,” Moore said.

Ignoring feet and ankles can also result in decreased or limited performance when exercising other regions of the body, he said. The “strength” of the foot involves the tendons that make up the foot and ankle. “These structures need to be intact to maintain the foot’s arch, normal function, range of motion and strength in performing exercise, walking and running,” Dr. Moore said.
