DIABETIC NEUROPATHY DISCUSSED BY A PODIATRIST

William Myers, DPM, a Conway Medical Center podiatrist, says that one of the most common problems diabetic patients experience is peripheral neuropathy. "There are varying degrees of neuropathy. Sometimes, it can be so severe that a patient can step on a tack and not even feel it. Also, many diabetics with neuropathy tend to tie their laces too tight in an attempt to compensate for the loss of feeling. This can lead to abrasions and subsequent infections."

"One thing I would caution diabetic patients is to check the water temperature before they soak their feet or bathe. Diabetics have no way to gauge the temperature of the water, so they tend to keep turning the temperature higher and higher. This can result in burns, sometimes severe."
