DIABETES FOOT CARE 8/3/2012

MOST FOOT SPECIALISTS, INCLUDING FOOT DOCTORS, PODIATRISTS AND CHIROPODISTS AGREE THAT YOU SHOULD AVOID SITTING WITH YOUR LEGS CROSSED AND STOP SMOKING AS IT DECREASES BLOOD FLOW TO THE LEGS IN DIABETIC PATIENTS.  SHOES SHOULD BE WORN AT ALL TIMES TO PREVENT YOUR FEET FROM INJURY.  OTHERWISE IF YOU HAVE POOR VISION AND LESS ABILITY TO FEEL PAIN, YOU MAY NOT NOTICE MINOR CUTS OR BUMPS.  CHECK THE INSIDE OF YOUR SHOES FOR ROUGH AREAS OR TORN PIECES THAT CAN CAUSE EXCESS PRESSURE OR IRRITATION.  IF YOU HAVE NERVE DAMAGE TO YOUR FEET, CHANGE OR TEMPORARILY REMOVE YOUR SHOES AFTER 5 HOURS OF WEARING THEM DURING THE DAY.  THIS CHANGES THE PRESSURE POINTS DURING THE COURSE OF THE DAY.

THE TYPE OF SHOES THAT YOU WEAR WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETES IS VERY IMPORTANT.  WEAR COMFORTABLE, WELL-FITTING SHOES THAT HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM IN THEM.  NEVER BUY SHOES THAT DON'T FIT PROPPERLY HOPING THAT THEY WILL STRETCH WITH TIME.  WEAR SHOES MADE OF CANVAS, LEATHER OR SUEDE, NEVER PLASTIC OR MATERIALS THAT DO NOT BREATHE.  DO NOT WEAR THONG SANDALS.  WEAR SHOES THAT HAVE LACES, VELCRO OR BUCKLES.  DO NOT WEAR POINTED, OPEN, HIGH HEELS, FLIP FLOPS OR SANDALS.  SOCKS PROVIDE ANOTHER LAYER OF PROTECTION AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE WORN.  WEAR CLEAN, DRY OR NONBINDING PANTY HOSE.  MOST IMPORTANTLY, ALWAYS WEAR CUSTOM MADE ORTHOTICS PRESCRIBED BY A PODIATRIST OR CHIROPODISTS TO PROVIDE BALANCE AND LIMIT PRESSURE POINTS ON THE SOLES OF THE FEET.  TO BE CONTINUED......MARZ
