ACHILLES TENDONITIS DISCUSSED BY TORONTO CHIROPODIST

ACHILLES TENDONITIS IS THE MOST COMMON TYPE OF TENDONITIS IN THE FOOT AND ANKLE.  THE PAIN IS GENERALLY LOCATED ABOUT 2 INCHES ABOVE THE HEEL BONE.  PAIN IS ACCOMPANIED BY STIFFNESS, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST STEP OF THE MORNING OR RISING AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF REST.  IT CAN ALSO OCCUR WHERE THE TENDON INSERTS INTO THE CALCANEOUS.  AS THE CONDITION PROGRESSES FROM THE INFLAMMATORY PHASE TO THE DEGENERATIVE PHASE AFTER ABOUT 2 TO 4 YEARS THE SWELLING AND INTENSE TENDERNESS WILL DEBREASE AND BE REPLACED WITH A LUMP OR NODULE ON THE BACK OF THE HEEL.  THIS IS KNOWN AS ACHILLES TENDONOSIS AND CAN TAKE MONTHS AND EVEN UP TO A YEAR TO HEAL.

IT USUALLY DEVELOPS AFTER OVERUSE IN RUNNERS OR SPORTS THAT REQUIRE QUICK BURSTS OF SPEED LIKE SOCCER, BASKETBALL OR TENNIS.  TREATMENT BEGINS BY REMOVING THE AGGRIVATING FACTORS. IF YOU ARE A RUNNER, SWITCH TO CYCLING WHILE RESTING OR IF YOU ARE A CYCLIST, AVOID HILLS.

TREATMENT SHOULD CONSIST OF ICE MASSAGE, REST, PHYSIOTHERAPY, CROSS TENDON FRICTION MASSAGE.  WEAR SHOES WITH A HEEL (1 INCH) UNTIL YOU ARE HEALED TO REDUCE THE STRESS ON THE TENDON.  STRETCHING IS ALSO IMPORTANT.  OUR FOOT CLINIC IS EQUIPPED WITH ALL THE LATEST PHYSIOTHERAPY EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS ALL OF OUR FOOT SPECIALISTS ARE TRAINED IN ART.  WE ALWAYS SPEND TIME TO PROPERLY EDUCATE OUR PATIENTS IN THE PROPER HOME CARE AND EXERCISES.
