Diabetes is a disease that affects the whole body. With the potential for reduce blood flow, neural
and musculature function, the feet are highly susceptible to ulcerations, amputations and other
complications. Foot related complications are extremely high for diabetics and are preventable.

Inspect your feet daily!

• Look for anything that could be stuck in your socks
• Look between each toes
• Look on the bottom and top of both feet
• Look for cuts, sore, redness, swelling or any unusual changes
• Do not cut your own nails, book regular appointments
• Apply lotion to dry skin but avoid applying between the toes
• If you notice anything at all irregular seek assistance immediately
* If you can’t reach your feet to inspect, use a mirror

Footwear choices
• Have your shoes professionally fitted
• Bring your orthotics with you when you go shoe shopping
• We recommend shoes with laces
• Always inspect inside your shoes before putting them on
• Avoid walking barefoot indoors and outdoors
• Avoid shoes with rough seams or stitching on the inside
• Avoid synthetic shoe materials (e.g. plastic, synthetic leather) as your feet can’t breathe

Academy Foot and Orthotics Clinics insists that all of our diabetic patient attend every 3
months for general nail care and a thorough foot inspection.

Every diabetic patient should be wearing custom orthotics at all times to reduce the risk of
corns, calluses and blisters.

Remember, we always treat our beloved patients like family
