PLANTAR FASCIITIS - MOST COMMON SUMMER FOOT PROBLEM

It's something many of us look forward to every Summer: Kicking off the shoes and going barefoot or shuffling around in flip-flops. But it can also lead to one of the most common Summer foot problems - plantar fasciitis. Mercy Health podiatrist Nicholas Nadaud, DPM says he sees 5 or 6 patients with this problem. You know you have it if you have pain with your first steps in the morning. "It's an inflammatory condition of a ligament on the bottom of the foot. Basically it supports your arch," says Dr. Nadaud.

Treating this condition requires wearing supportive shoes as much as you can. "There are over-the-counter orthotics or there are customized ones that we can take moldings of people's feet," says Dr. Nadaud. But first Nadaud recommends trying conservative measures first. Anti-inflammatory pain medications can go a long way to relieving pain. A lot of people also find it helps to freeze a water bottle and roll that throughout the whole arch. You also need to stretch your calf muscles out as much as you can. There are injections of steroids that can help give pretty quick relief to this type of pain. But the shots themselves can be quite uncomfortable.
