Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, president of the American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics recently appeared on Mass Appeal to give tips to parents on back to school shoe shopping. Dr. DeCaro also talked about how important it is to see your podiatrist when parents notice odd wear patterns on shoes. He spoke about how this leads to important diagnoses of conditions such as flatfeet and rotational abnormalities.

According to DeCaro, “Shopping for shoes at the end of the day is recommended, especially if you are buying athletic shoes that will be worn at the end of the day for sports. Kids' feet swell during these activities so having proper fitting shoes is very important.” DeCaro also talked about how even nail fungus in kids can be caused by ill-fitting shoes. “Kids sometimes have differing shoe sizes from foot to foot. Unilateral toenail fungus in a child can be a sign that a child might have two different foot sizes."
