Developed at the University of Southern California, the "Foot Selfie" device is a smartphone-based positioning device that allows patients to monitor and prevent diabetic foot complications such as: heavy callus, cuts/scrapes and even ulcerations. The 3D system allows a heel platform, smartphone holder and a base connecting the two components, the foot selfie app directs user to view photos and upload them for review by health-care providers which can help prevent issues.

Diabetic patients can suffer from neuropathy which reduces their perception of pain, they may feel nothing on the bottom of the foot at all which is dangerous and can allow ulcerations to form.
