PODIATRIST, ALAN MACGILL, DPM, AACFAS, A FLORIDA FOOT AND ANKLE SURGEON AND ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF FOOT AND ANKLE SURGEONS, SAYS, "WE ARE SEEING MORE SEVERE INJURY PATTERNS IN THE OBESE POPULATION COMPARED TO THE NON-OBESE.  THESE SEVERE ANKLE FRACTURES TEND TO HAVE A WORSE PROGNOSTIC OUTCOME COMPARED TO OTHERS. THE FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY COORELATE WITH WHAT I CONTINUE TO SEE IN MY PRACTICE.  IT'S BASIC PHYSICS:  AS BODY MASS INCREASES, SO DOES THE KINETIC ENERGY ASSSOCIATED WITH THE INJURY.  THE HIGHER THE BODY MASS, THE GREATER THE RISK OF MORE SEVERE ANKLE INJURY."

OBESITY NEARLY DOUBLES THE ODDS OF A PATIENT HAVING THE MOST SEVERE CATEGORY OF ANKLE FRACTURE, ACCORDING TO RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN A RECENT ISSUE OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF FOOT AND ANKLE SURGURY (JFAS).  THE STUDY, WHICH WAS CONDUCTED AMONG 280 PATIENTS, EXPLORED THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN OBESITY AND SEVERITY OF ANKLE FRACTURES.  IT ANALYZED THE X-RAYS OF EACH PATIENT'S FRACTURE AND CLASSIFIED THE SEVERITY OF EACH ONE.

ANOTHER FACTOR TO CONSIDER IN OBESE PATIENTS IS THAT THEIR GENERAL OVERALL HEALTH TENDS TO BE LOWER AND THEY ARE USUALLY ALREADY AFFLICTED WITH HEART CONDITIONS, DIABETES AND OVERALL POORER HEALTH THAN NON-OBESE PATIENTS.  WE TRY TO EDUCATE OUR PATIENTS ON PROPER NUTRITION, WEIGHT AND EXERCISE, ESPECIALLY AS MOST TYPE II DIABETIC PATIENTS DISEASE IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO OBESITY.

ACCORDING TO DR. ALIREZA KHOSROABABY, A CALIFORNIA PODIATRIST WHO PRACTICES AT THE FOOT AND ANKLE ALLIANCE, THE DETROIT LIONS HAVE BEEN THWARTED BY POOR MANAGEMENT, DRAFT PICKS THAT DISAPPOINTED AS WELL AS FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES.

WHILE MOST PLAYERS PRACTICE IN THE OFF-SEASON, SOME OF THE LIONS HAVE BEEN RESTING DUE TO THEIR FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES.  FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS AROUND THE NFL.  MOST OF THE INJURIES HAVE BEEN HEALING WELL DURING THE OFF-SEASON, BUT DETROIT LIONS COACHES AND DOCTORS AREN'T TAKING ANY CHANCES.

PLAYERS SUCH AS MIKEL LESHOURE HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO TAKE IT EASY. LESHORE TORE HIS ACHILLES TENDON DURING LAST SPRING TRAINING AND HAD TO HAVE IT SURGICALLY REPAIRED.  HE IS RECOVERING WELL, BUT NOW HIS OTHER LEG IS BOTHERING HIM AS THE BODY COMPENSATES FOR THE INJURY BY PUTTING PRESSURE ON THE OTHER SIDE.

SAFETY LOUIS DELMAS AND LINEBACKER DOUG HOGUE AND STEPHEN TULLOCH ARE TAKING TIME OFF AS WELL.  DELMAS ROLLED HIS ANKLE AND SHOULD BE BACK ON THE FIELD SOON, ALONG WITH HOGUE AND YULLOCH.

FOOTBALL PLAYERS CAN GET FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES DUE TO RUNNING, SIDE TO SIDE CUTTING, OR FROM DIRECT TRAUMA FROM ANOTHER PLAYER DURING A TACKLE.

FOOTBALL PLAYERS (AND EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING RISKS:

1. INVERSION ANKLE SPRAINS CAN DAMAGE THE ANKLE LIGAMENTS, AND CAN ALSO BE ASSOCIATED WITH PERONEAL TENDON INJURIES AND FRACTURES,

2. ANKLE FRACTURES, METATARSAL FRACTURES, AND LISFRANC FRACTURES CAN SIDELINE ATHLETES AND SOMETIMES REQUIRE SURGERY.

3. CUTS AND BONE BRUISES MAY ALSO RESULT FROM HIGH IMPACT DURING TACKLING.

4. EXCESSIVE TRAINING CAN LEAD TO HEEL PAIN, ACHILLES TENDONITIS, SESAMOIDITIS. STRESS FRACTURES. POSTERIOR TIBIAL TENDONITIS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS,

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE NFL TO SUFFER FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES. ANYONE CAN INJURE THEMSELVES,  REMEMBER. ANY TYPE OF FOOT AND ANKLE PAIN IS NEVER NORMAL,  IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEEK ADVISE FROM A FOOT SPECIALIST SUCH AS A CHIROPODIST OR PODIATRIST SO YOU CAN HAVE YOUR FOOT EXAMINED AND GIVE YOU THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION,

PLEASE CALL ONE OF OUR CHIROPODISTS AT 416-465-8737 TO SPEAK TO ONE OF OUR FOOT SPECIALIST ABOUT YOUR FOOT AND/OR ANKLE NEEDS.

TORONTO PODIATRIST AND TORONTO FOOT SPECIALIST, DR. LLOYD NESBITT ANSWERS THE QUESTION AS WHETHER THERE IS ANY TRUTH TO THE BELIEF THAT BONES THAT HAVE BEEN BROKEN CAN HELP PREDICT THE WEATHER?  "BACK IN PODIATRIC MEDICAL SCHOOL IN SAN FRANCISCO, A LOCAL RHEUMATOLOGIST TAUGHT US THAT GRANDMOTHERS WOULD OFTEN BE ABLE TO TELL IF IT WAS GOING TO RAIN AS THEIR BUNIONS (ENLARGED BIG -TOE JOINTS) WOULD BE SORE."  THIS IS BECAUSE, DURING THE FALL IN ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE THAT INDICATES IMPENDING RAIN, THE JOINT CAN EXPAND.

HOWEVER, DR. NESBITT, TORONTO PODIATRIST DOUBTS THAT BONES THAT HAVE BEEN BROKEN WOULD REACT IN A SIMILIAR FASHION.  "IN FACT, OFTEN WHEN A FOOT BONE HAS HEALED FROM A BREAK ... IT HEALS WITH A THICKENED OR STRONGER STATE THAN IT WAS ORIGINALLY.  UNLESS THE FRACTURE INVOLVED AN ADJACENT JOINT, THAN A BROKEN BONE WOULD BE UNLIKELY TO ENABLE YOU TO PREDICT THE WEATHER."
