Many runners are all too familiar with the black toenail. This condition involves bruising, blistering, or bleeding beneath the nail from repetitive trauma, either from the top of the shoe banging against the nail or the toe slamming into the end of the shoe. In severe cases, beneath-the-nail blisters can cause the nail to detach—either partially or fully—from the nail plate. This process can be quite painful if the detachment is only partial, warns Dr. Lori Weisenfeld, NYC sports podiatrist, explaining that once the nail fully separates from the nail plate, it is officially dead and will never re-attach.
The good news about this: it’s no longer painful. The bad news: it can take a long time for a new nail to grow in—about a year for big toenails and 3 to 6 months for smaller nails. In certain cases, a fresh nail can begin growing underneath an old, dead nail. If there’s additional repetitive trauma, the new nail can become bruised and detached as well. To prevent this, Weisenfeld recommends visiting your podiatrist who can trim down or entirely remove the dead nail, which will allow the new nail room to grow in properly.

WHEN I GRADUATED FROM CHIROPRACTIC COLLEGE IN 1980 I WAS ALREADY WELL VERSED INTHE IMPORTANCE OF POSTURE AND BIOMECHANICS AND HOW THAT AFFECTED FUNCTION.  IN PARTICULAR I WAS INTRIGUED WITH CUSTOM ORTHOTICS AND HOW THIS BIOMECHANICAL DEVISE COULD MAKE SUCH A HUGE CHANGE IN THE BODY'S FUNCTION.  AS OUR BODY IS A MACHINE, IF YOU HAVE A STRUCTURAL FAULT, THAT EFFECTS THE BODY'S POSTURE AND GAIT.  IF THERE IS A STRUCTURAL FAULT IN THE FOOT THEN EVERY JOINT ABOVE THE FOOT WILL BE AFFECTED.  AS THE SAYING GOES, IF THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR HOUSE IS NOT SOLID OR OUT OF ALIGNMENT, THEN THE REST OF THE STRUCTURE ABOVE WILL BE IMPACTED.  AS THE TWIG IS BENT, SO GROWS THE TREE.  MOST PEOPLE ARE BORN WITH A GENETIC DEFICIENCY CALLED OVERPRONATION.  LUCKILY THIS CAN BE CORRECTED WITH CUSTOM MADE ORTHOTICS.  WE HAVE HAD MANY PATIENTS PURCHASE ORTHOTICS FROM US AND HAD THEIR HEALTH PROBLEMS CLEAR UP.  SOMETIMES THEY CAME IN ABOUT THEIR FEET AND AFTER GETTING ORTHOTICS THEIR KNEE OR BACK PAIN DISAPPEARED AS A BONUS, UNEXPECTANTLY.

IF YOU THINK THAT YOU MIGHT BE A CANDIDATE FOR CUSTOM MADE ORTHOTICS OR ARE SUFFERING FROM JOINT PAIN, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT OUR OFFICE AT 416-465-8737.
