NeuropathyBeth Deloria had loved running for most of her life. When she was afflicted with a spinal injury, she refused to give up her favorite activity. Deloria continued to practice through her pain and train for marathons. But one day she collapsed on the floor from intense back pain and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors confirmed that Deloria had birth defects called spina bifada occulta and spondylolisthesis and two ruptured discs.

They were able to treat the nerve damage in her spine, but from then on she suffered from a “foot drop,” where her left foot and the bottom part of her left leg were paralyzed. At first she thought she might never run again. But after becoming out-fitted with a new orthotic brace and putting in some hard work, she is back at running marathons again, most recently the Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half Marathon . Deloria hopes to inspire others who suffer from foot drop which can be caused by stroke, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and neuropathy.

If you are having any trouble with pain you think may be caused by the nervous system, contact a chiropodist like  Marz Hardy of Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics. She can assess your problem and provide appropriate treatment options for your foot and ankle.

Nerve Disorders of the Foot and Ankle

Similar to well-known nerve disorders in the hands, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve disorders that affect the foot and ankle occur in patients for reasons ranging from stress to genetics. Nerve disorders of the foot should be addressed right away. Two of the most common nerve disorders of the foot and ankle are Interdigital Neuroma and Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.

Interdigital Neuroma is caused by localized inflammation of one of the nerves that controls toe sensitivity in the frontal area of the foot. This inflammation is generally only found in the second or third interspace. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, a condition that is less common than Interdigital Neuroma, is similar to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in that it is caused by a compression of the nerve caused by any number of factors (mostly associated with excess pronation).
