TORONTO CHIROPODIST, D.Ch., B.Sc., PODIATRIC MEDICINE
Chiropodists are primary health care specialists who are experts in the management of foot problems. They treat patients in a variety of ways including the use of braces, casts, orthotic devices, physical therapy or surgery. Chiropodists help patients eliminate foot pain, gain mobility, and maintain healthy feet. They treat sports injuries; common foot conditions such as bunions, heel pain, spurs, flat feet, hammertoes, neuromas, ingrown toenails, varicose veins, fungal infections, diabetic wounds, warts, corns and calluses. The practice of chiropody is the assessment of the foot and the treatment and prevention of diseases or disorders of the foot by therapeutic, surgical, orthotic and palliative means. A chiropodist also renders care of sprains, fractures, infections, and injuries of the foot, ankle and heel.
In addition to undergraduate school training, chiropodists also attend graduate school for training in podiatric medicine. In Ontario, chiropodists and podiatrists are regulated under the College of Chiropodists of Ontario, and are required to take provincial board exams as well as be licensed by the province in which they practice. Chiropodists practice under the same scope of practice as Ontario Podiatrists and are treated on an equal basis as Ontario Podiatrists and at the same rate by Ontario Extended Health Insurance Plans.
Foot & Ankle specialists are in demand more than ever today because of a rapidly aging population. In addition, foot disorders are among the most widespread and neglected health problems affecting people in this country.
