Holiday Shopping

Remember, that as the holiday season is upon us, we usually spend a lot more time on our feet rushing around shopping for Christmas presents in malls, etc..  Sometimes after work when we are wearing our dress shoes and in the case of females, high heels or uncomfortable dress shoes.  Both podiatrists and chiropodists agree that is best to make sure that you are wearing the correct footwear if extended periods of walking are involved.  Before you leave home in the morning and you know that you will be doing a lot of walking that day, make sure that you bring a good pair of running shoes or comfortable walking shoes with you.  Friendly tips from your family foot specialist!

  High Heels

They lead to broken feet, bunions, hammer toes, inflamed nerves and ingrown nails.  Why would ladies continue to wear them?  It makes them feel "empowered" and makes their calf muscles look better is the common response.  But it is detrimental to their overall health.  Rember, it is how you feel and not how you look when it comes to your health.

FYI  Marz will be attending a seminar on the latest techniques in podiatry which will be attended by many of her podiatrist and chiropodist colleagues.  Fortunaltely, this happens to be in the sunny south aboard a Holland American Cruise ship.  This will be taking place in the last week of December and the first week of January.  We will also be attending another educational seminar in Las Vegas in the second week of January 2012 in which our whole office will be attending and thus the clinic will be closed for 3 days.  Always striving to bring you the latest techniques and inovations in the field of podiatry for our family of patients!

  Quote of the Day

 There are two ways of spreading light.  To be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

A recent study by the American Podiatry Association found that 72% of people with foot pain did not exercise due to the pain which led to increased weight gain.  The obvious solution would be to address the cause of the pain and try to correct it.  But it is also important that we get the patient exercising with exercises that reduce the stress on the foot such as swimming or cycling.

Hello, my name is Nicole Tam.  I have been in practice for over 10 years and I enjoy every aspect of my profession!  Prior to joining Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics, I worked in a hospital setting with my primary focus on diabetic foot care and the prevention of foot amputations.  Diabetes, unfortunately has a predilection for the forth lumbar nerve and as a consequence, the lower limb, particularly the foot is commonly involved.  Acording to the Canadian Diabetes Association, today more than 9 million people live with diabetes or prediabetes.  Diabetes can affect the blood circulation and nerve function of the body.  Many people who have diabetes do not realize that the disease can affect their feet.  There are a number of tests, including Doppler that our office has that a chiropodist can perform on the lower limb to help identify any areas of concern and educate the patient on how to maintain healthy feet.  It is recommended that a person with diabetes have at a minimum of at least an annual foot check with a chiropodist to ensure proper foot health.  If you or someone you know, has diabetes, I strongly recommend a diabetic foot assessment to help you determine your foot health.  Let us keep you walking on BOTH FEET!

When you are buying shoes make sure you try them on in the store and do not just go by the shoe size.  It seems every company depending on the country of manufacture is different, so you cannot rely on the size.  Also make sure you bring your orthotics with you and put them in the shoes you are thinking about buying to see if the fit is right.  Comfortable shoes lead to happy feet!

As this is Remembrance Day I would like to pay tribute to all those brave Canadians and others who gave the greatest gift possibe so we can live as free people.  Just a note that my oldest daughter is in the DND and her husband is currently doing a 6 month tour of Afganistan and will be away for Christmas.  Our prayers are with him.  Just a note that I lived my first 17 years in a communist country and I thank my father and mother to have the courage to bring me to the best country in the world!  Freedom is the greatest gift.

A couple of tips when buying shoes;

1. When buying shoes it is better to buy them later in the day as your feet tend to swell slowly and will be larger at the end of the day.  This tends to be more true for women than men due to hormonal issues.

2. Make sure that the shoe fits in both width and length.  If you buy a bigger shoe so the width is correct, your foot will slide within the shoe causing blisters, etc. and will only get worse as the shoe slowly stretches over time with use.  Always remember, feet first!

Were you aware that you can wear orthotics in sandals and clogs.  Yes you can and we carry a full line including naot and birkenstock among others.  The only drawback is that they are usually not interchangable with other shoes.  But if you need orthotics and you like wearing sandles or clogs in the summer you have the option.  Talk to one of of our foot specialists for more information on this subject.

As the skiing and hockey season are upon us I will talk about footbed's or custom orthotics for skates and ski boots.  When you are doing a sport where your boot  or skate is very tightly closed, it is very important that the foot be supported in the nuetral position, especially if  the person already pronates so the arch doesn't collaps more. If the foot isn't properly supported, then the knee's turn inward (medially) which in turn affects your whole posture and your balance.  Also the transfer of power from your feet to your skiis or skates is diminished.  Did you know that over 90% of professional athletes wear orthotics during their sport.  FYI Marz and her husband, Dr. Hardy have a !00' by 40' hockey rink in their back yard every year.  Last year we had 18" of ice in it and was good until the beginning of April.  We are also avid skiers and can't wait for snow.

Once you get your custom orthotics it is very important that you try to wear them as much as possible after the initial break-in period.  Usually you will find that you need one pair for dress shoes and another for sports or casual shoes, although not always.  This is more so for women as the orthotics that will fit in their sports or casual shoes usually will not fit in their dress shoes.  Also in the case of women's shoes you should always avoid high heels and should only wear shoes with no more than a one inch lift if you have to.  High heels are very bad for your feet, knees, hips and spine.  They keep a lot of chiropractors and foot doctors in business.

Differences between PODIATRISTS and CHIROPODISTS

There are approximately 75 PODIATRISTS and over 500 CHIROPODISTS in Ontario.  The number of PODIATRISTS continue to dwindle as the number of CHIROPODISTS increases.  In July, 1993 the Medical Doctors of Ontario successfuly lobbied the Ontario government and had them impose a cap on PODIATRISTS so that all new Podiatrists on Ontario would have to practice under the CHIROPODY model and be registered as a CHIROPODIST.  PODIATRISTS are allowed to do bone surgery.  CHIROPODISTS can do surgery except that involving the bone.  They are allowed to prescribe and dispense medications as a PODIATRIST is allowed.  PODIATRIST have either 3 or 4 years undergraduate training as does a CHIROPODIST in Ontario.  PODIATRISTS have a further 4 years traing at Trois-Riviere in Quebec while CHIROPODISTS have 3 years further training at the MICHENER INSTITUTE in Toronto.  CHIROPODISTS do their clinical training at the MICHENER FOOT CLINIC.

My name is Meredith Cossitt.  I graduated from the Michener Institute as a chiropodist just this year.  I was fortunate to have the opportunity to start my practice at such a great clinic as the Academy Foot and Orthotics Clinic.  If you are a patient here I'm sure you can testify to the warm and inviting atmosphere and the friendly and knowledgable staff.  I've actually had a patient like the decor so much she wondered who did the design work.  It's not just about looking nice though, we have numerous posters and models around the office that we use to educate our patients about their specific condittions.  Our goal is to provide an enviroment that encourages healing and fosters patient education.
