WEARING TOO SMALL KIDS SHOES CAN LEAD TO LIFE-LONG FOOT PROBLEMS STATES CALIFORNIA PODIATRIST

Shopping for new shoes has become a major part of the annual back-to-school ritual. California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA) President Rebecca Moellmer, DPM, a board certified podiatric physician and surgeon, says, "Many children are wearing shoes that are too small, which invites the risk of injury and deformity."  As an Associate Professor of podiatric medicine, surgery, and biomechanics at the California College of Podiatric Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, Dr. Moellmer notes, "The human foot is a highly complex structure, composed of 26 bones working together with dozens of muscles, ligaments, veins, and joints to allow the foot to adapt to uneven walking surfaces, and acting as a shock absorber with each step. These bones are typically not hardened until one is in their early twenties, and ill-fitting shoes during this period of development can lead to life-long foot problems."

At our Toronto foot clinic, Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics we have had many parents come in to get their children new orthotic all the while the child's feet have increased several shoe sizes and they are still wearing orthotics that are several sizes too small.  I explain to the parents that this is worse than not wearing orthotics at all and it is very important to have new orthotics made every time the size of the shoe increases.  Making sure that the child is wearing the correct size shoe and orthotics is very important to their proper growth and health.

If you or a loved one requires high quality advice, foot care or custom orthotics from foot specialists who really care about their patients than look no further than our foot clinic.  We are located less than 100 yards from the Broadview Subway Station and are open 7 days a week, early until late for your convenience.
