Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant confirmed that he ruptured his Achilles during the second quarter of Game 5 in the NBA finals against the Raptors.

Achilles tendon ruptures occur with sudden stop and go movements, such as in basketball and other sports. It occurs mostly when the foot is in a forceful plantar flexion state with knee moving into full extension.

Signs and symptoms of an achilles tendon rupture include an audible snap, a sudden onset of pain which rapidly subsides and point tenderness, swelling and decreased range of motion instantly. A test that can confirm an Achilles rupture test chaired is called the Thompson test where you squeeze the back of the calf and the foot should plantar flex, if it doesn't this indicates an Achilles rupture.

This injury usually involves a surgical tendon repair with a return of only 75-80% function. Rehabilitation for this injury lasts about 6-8 months and consists of exercises, heel lifts and proprioception exercises to get back to regular shape.

Many NBA players in the past have suffered from this same injury, including Kobe Bryant and DeMarcus Cousins. Durant's recovery clock has started and if the average recovery period suits him he should return to game action in 2020 which could mean he may be back in time for the next regular NBA game session. However, recovery times always vary and it is important that Durant follows the proper regime, rests and takes care of himself in order for him to return to the game. We are all hoping for the best for Durant and we hope to see him back on the court!
