TORONTO FOOT CLINIC SHARES SOME INFORMATION REGARDING 'SMELLY FEET'

Foot odor is caused by two factors:  shoes and sweat.  Your hands and feet produce more sweat than any other part of your body; when sweat interacts with bacteria in your shoes and socks, they are able to grow and flourish.  To reduce or prevent foot odor, you must address both the sweat and the bacteria that accumulate in your footwear.

Read on to learn some easy steps to help prevent smelly feet:

Avoid wearing plastic shoes or nylon socks—wear shoes made out of mesh, leather, canvas, or other breathable materials.

Get in the habit of wearing socks with your closed-toed shoes.

Wash your feet thoroughly every day using a mild soap and be sure to dry them well afterwards.  Good hygiene is essential for keeping your feet bacteria- and odor-free.

If you notice any red, itchy, or dry skin between your toes or on the bottoms of your feet, be sure to seek treatment immediately.

Do not wear the same pair of shoes every day.  Change your shoes and socks each day and give a pair of shoes 24 hours to dry between wearings.

Use baby powder or foot powder to dust your feet and eliminate excess moisture.  Applying an antibacterial ointment may also help to reduce or prevent odors.

Wear thick socks that help to draw moisture away from the skin.  Absorbent materials, such as cotton and merino wool, work quite well.

An inherited condition called hyperhidrosis can also cause smelly feet.  This disorder leads to excessive amounts of sweating and usually affects males.  If you are having problems with foot odor or if you would like to learn more about the causes and treatments available, contact Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics at 416-465-8737.
