  • TORONTO DOCTOR AND TORONTO FOOT SPECIALIST DISCUSS PLANTAR FASCIITIS

PLANTAR FASCIITIS AMONG BASKETBALL PLAYERS IS COMMON.  IN A RECENT STUDY AT DUKE UNIVERSITY OF 26 N.C.A.A. MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYERS FOUND 6 FEET THAT SHOWED SIGNS OF SERIOUS TRAUMA UPON M.R.I. EXAMINATION.  2 OF THE PLAYERS HADN'T EXPERIENCED ANY FOOT PAIN, BUT THE BONE MARROW IN THEIR METATARSALS WAS FLOODED WITH EXCESS FLUID, A POSSIBLE INDICATOR OF EARLY TISSUE AND BONE DAMAGE AND OFTEN OF A IMMINENT STRESS FRACTURE.  IN FACT, ONE OF THEM DEVELOPED A STRESS FRACTURE NOT LONG AFTER THE STUDY BEGAN AND HAD TO SIT OUT THE SEASON.

THE FOOT IS AT SUCH A HIGH RISK FOR INJURY LARGELY BECAUSE IT HAS SO MANY SMALL, FRAGILE PARTS, 26 BONES, 33 JOINTS AND MORE THAN 100 TENDONS, LIGAMENTS AND MUSCLES.  INJURIES TO THE PLANTAR FASCIA AND CONNECTED TISSUE ARE THE MOST COMMON FOOT AILMENTS IN ATHLETES OVER 30.  MANY PEOPLE, FEELING THE FIRST STABS OF HEEL PAIN FROM AN INJURED FASCIA, SWITCHING TO SOFTER, LOOSER ATHLETIC SHOES, THINKING THAT WILL HELP THE PROBLEM.  THIS ACTUALLY ADDS INSTABILITY TO THE FOOT, COMPOUNDING THE PROBLEM.  THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IS TO HAVE THE PATIENT FITTED FOR CUSTOM ORTHOTICS TO SUPPORT THE FOOT IN THE PROPER POSITION TO REDUCE THE STRESS ON THE FASCIA AND TO BEGIN THE HEALING PROCESS.

IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE ARE SUFFERING FROM THE SYMPTOMS OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT OUR FOOT CLINIC FOR HONEST, COMPETENT FOOT CARE AT 416-465-8737.
