Toronto Foot Clinic, Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics has been providing patients with high quality custom orthotics since 1980.  We use only high quality labs in order to provide our patients with a high quality custom orthotics.  All of our 4 foot specialisrts are highly educated and skilled in the prescription and dispensing of orthotics.  Most people are born with a genetic deficiency known as overpronation where the longtitudinal arch has collapsed which causes the ankles to roll inwards an the lower limb goes into medial rotation which affects your gait and every joint above the ankle.  Orthotics are devices inserted into the shoe to correct irregular or abnormal walking patterns. Also known as arch supports, orthotic devices allow individuals to walk, run, and stand more comfortably. Many individuals turn to over-the-counter orthotic products, such as felt pads, to treat mild symptoms; however, store-bought products often do little to combat the underlying problem as they are not custom-made. If you’re struggling with a unique foot structure or condition, then custom-made orthoses from your podiatrist may be the solution.

Consider the three types of orthotic devices to learn more about your options.

Rigid orthotics

The first type of orthotic is a rigid device used to control function to make walking less of painful and more productive. These rigid orthotics are typically composed of a firm material, such as carbon fiber or plastic, and are created from a plaster cast or image of your foot. Rigid orthotics control your motion in the two major foot joints directly below the ankle and help to eliminate pain in the legs, thighs, and lower back.

Soft Orthotics

Another common type of orthotic device is the soft orthotic, which is typically made from cushioned materials that can be worn directly against the sole of the foot and extend from the heel past the ball of your foot. Soft orthoses are commonly used to increase balance, absorb shock, and take pressure off of sore spots on the feet.

Semi-Rigid Orthotics

Ideal for individuals who participate in sports, semi-rigid orthotics promote foot balance and consist of several layers of soft material that are reinforced with more rigid materials. In addition to aiding with balance during walking or running, semi-rigid orthotics are often used to treat in-toeing, out-toeing, and flatfoot disorders in children.
