TORONTO CHIROPODIST SHARES SOME INFORMATION REGARDING ANKLES

We rely on our feet every day, and often we don’t give them a second thought until something goes wrong. However, feet are complex and delicate structures, and they are susceptible to a variety of painful and debilitating conditions. Understanding these foot conditions can help you to prevent and treat them in their early stages.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a general term used to describe joint pain, and it occurs in many different varieties. Osteoarthritis, which is caused by the degeneration of cartilage in the joints as a result of wear, is common in the feet and ankles because of the significant and constant strain placed on our feet. Post-tramatic arthritis can occur in the feet after a serious injury such as bone breakage or damage to tendons and ligaments.

Gout

Gout is a specific form of arthritis caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood. This acid accumulates in the synovial fluid, which lubricates your joints, and crystallizes, impeding motion and causing swelling. Attacks of gout may be isolated or chronic. Certain lifestyle changes and medications can reduce the frequency and severity of gout.

Sever's Disease

Sever’s disease is an irritation of the ankle caused by strain on the Achilles tendon or impact to the heel. This condition typically occurs in young athletes as a result of strain on developing tissue. Sever’s disease can usually be treated with rest, proper stretching, icing, and moderating activity. If pain persists, contact a podiatrist about padding or custom orthotics.
