TIPS ON BUYING BEST WINTER FOOTWEAR FOR PREVENTING FALLS

With the colder months of the year upon us, it is very important to analyze the type of foot wear you buy for the winter months. Many individuals, elderly and those who have balance issues, may be at further risk for falls during the winter months especially with the ice, snow and slush surrounding us. It is important to wear sturdy, support footwear throughout the winter months to help prevent falls.

To protect the feet and ankles and reduce the risk of falls some questions to ask your chiropodist or your sales person when purchasing or looking for shoes include:
- Does the shoe have a good ankle support?
- Does my foot slide around in the shoe?
- Does the shoe fit me well?
- Does the shoe have good grip?
- Does the shoe have good arch support?

It is also important for individuals at risk for falling or who have a history of falls to get their feet examined by a Chiropodist/foot specialist who can make specific recommendations on footwear and help them prevent any further accidents.

If you or a loved one suffers from frequent falls it is important to get your footwear checked out by a foot specialist/Chiropodist in order to see if this is another factor that can help reduce the number of falls experienced.
