It’s summer, and your feet are in the spotlight. The boots and pumps and booties are abandoned for flip-flips, and suddenly you notice your under-celebrated feet; not only the way they look, but how healthy they are...or not. “We see the typical summer foot problems,” said Mindy Taylor, DPM who shares a practice in Port Orange with her podiatrist husband, Dr. Roger Zema, Jr. “People want to go barefoot or wear unsupportive shoes, which cause pain in their own right,” she said.

Even walking on the beach can be hazardous, causing sprains and fractures if the sand is soft, and you set your foot wrong, she added. “Exposed feet make people prone to infection or injury, caused by something as simple as stepping on a small shell,” Taylor continued. “Diabetics must be particularly vigilant when it comes to foot health and injuries, which are much harder to heal.” Even blisters can be a big issue if not properly treated.
