STRETCHING

ONE OF THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN TRAINING IS NOT TO TAKE THE TIME TO STRETCH PROPERLY BEFORE AND AFTER WORKING OUT.  IN THE 70'S AND 80'S PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY TEAMS WOULD HAVE THEIR TRAINING  CAMPS IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER CONCENTRATING ON STRENGTHENING AND ENDURANCE ONLY.  LITTLE REGARD WAS GIVEN TO STRETCHING.  RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW STRONG A MUSCLE IS, IF IT IS NOT FLEXIBLE IT IS MORE EASILY INJURED.

THAT IS WHY NOW STRETCHING BEFORE AND AFTER WORKING OUT TAKES UP APPROXIMATELY 30% OF THE TRAINING TIME AN ATHLETE SPENDS IN TRAINING.  IT IS ONE OF THE THINGS WHERE YOU DON'T PHYSICALLY SEE A DIFFERENCE, BUT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE.
