According to a study conducted by Loyola University Medical Center, young athletes who sustain extreme preparation for particular sports are more likely to suffer from astress fracture.

Athletes as young as 12 or 13 years old are likely to suffer from fractures and other foot related problems that might be brought with them into adulthood. In the study , 70 percent of youngsters were likely injuries due to overuse of their feet. “We should be cautious about intense specialization in one sport before and during adolescence," said Dr. Neeru Jayanthi, sports medicine physician at Loyola University, "Among the recommendations we can make, based on our findings, is that young athletes should not spend more hours per week in organized sports than their ages."
