Shoe Retailers Struggle to Accommodate Size Increase in America

Chicagoan Whitney Miller, who is 6-foot-2 and wears a size 13, said: The National Shoe Retailers Association claim that the most widely-purchased shoe sizes have increased over the last few decades for both men and women alike. As Americans have been increasing in size overall, so have the size of their feet and footwear.

Unfortunately many retailers have only small inventories of larger shoe sizes, especially in the realm of women’s shoes. "You still can't find a shoe manufacturer that will make anything above a size 11 without it being a special order," says online business owner Karen Williamson, "It's like the bigger your feet are, the more you don't exist to them."

Wearing the wrong shoe size can cause discomfort and injury. If you are experiencing foot pain, consult chiropodist Marz Hardy of Dr. Hardy's Toronto Foot Clinic, Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics. Marz Hardy and her associates all can treat your foot and ankle needs.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

Sometimes it may be difficult finding the right shoe size especially because shoe sizes tend to vary depending on the brand and company you are looking for. A size 6 for one brand may be a size 7 in another. Although many people know their exact shoe size, it can range within 2 sizes depending on where they shop.

So it is important not to always go for a size 7 just because you think you might be a size 7 universally. It is best to try on the shoe and walk around for a bit to see how it fits and how it feels. Comfort is essential and the fitting has to be well otherwise it can lead to blisters, bruises at the back of the ankle and it can also hurt your toes if the shoe is too tight for example.

Shopping online for shoes can be very tricky and time consuming, especially since you cannot try on the shoe or see how it fits or how it feels. Also, buying a shoe online then getting it in the mail only to find out that it was the wrong shoe can be frustrating.
