SHIN SPLINTS: CAUSES, TREATMENTS AND AND PREVENTION

Shin splints occur in a lot of individuals in various scenarios. There are two types of shin splints – one is known as “anterior stress syndrome” and the other is known as “medial tibial stress syndrome”. Anterior stress syndrome occurs in individuals on the anterolateral portion of the shin, this usually occurs due to compartment syndrome or small tears in the anterior tibialis muscle. It may also occur due an imbalance between the anterior and posterior leg muscles – often in beginner athletes.

Another type of shin splints is known as medial tibial stress syndrome this occurs on the inside portion of the shin, typically on the dominant leg. This occurs in a lot of runners and individuals with flat feet or those that pronate. Shin splints can occur in individuals who change their workout regime abruptly and begin working out too much too soon. Those that pronate have fallen arches and this causes an increase stress on the bone or muscle of the foot as the foot cannot absorb the shock. Other causes include: limb length discrepancy and a tight heel cord.

Individuals who have shin splints need to see a Chiropodist to determine the cause of their pain in order to properly control the problem and minimize the re-occurrence of the pain.
