RASHES FROM NICKEL USED IN IPADS AND OTHER TABLETS ARE BECOMING MORE COMMON

According to Dr. Sharon Jacob, a  dermatologist at Rady Children's Hospital in Chicago and reported in Paediatrics a 11 year old boy developed a common skin condition that caused scaly patches but had developed a different rash all over his body that didn't respond to usual treatment.  The doctors finally traced the rash to a nickel allergy to his IPad.  Apparently many personal electronic devices including cellphones and laptops contain nickel which is one of the most common allergy-inducing metals.

Doctors tested the IPad and found out that nickel was used in the coating and the boy used the device daily.  It is recommended that these devices be put into a protective case to shield you directly from the metal.  People with existing allergies from nickel should avoid direct contact with nickel containing devices.  Nickel allergies have been traced to other common products such as jewelry, zippers and eyeglass frames.

Apparently 25% of children who get skin test  for allergies have nickel allergies compared to 17% a decade ago for no reason.  there is evidence that nickel allergies are becoming more prominent.  !7% of women and 3% of men in the general population are allergic to nickel.
