PROBIOTICS CAN FACILITATE HEALING OF DIABETIC FOOT ULCERS

A recent study has correlated a relationship between probiotics and diabetic foot ulcers. The study was published in the Diabetes Metabolism Research and Reviews and concludes that probiotics can help reduce the size of diabetic foot ulcers while simultaneously also reducing blood sugar levels. The study occurred on 60 patients with Wagner grade 3 diabetic foot ulcers in which individuals received either probiotics or a placebo drug. Results showed that the probiotics displayed a reduced ulcer size in comparison to the placebo group. In addition, the probiotics also reduced fasting plasma glucose levels and HbA1C levels.

Although this study showed promising results, it is unclear if the probiotics alone had an effect on the plasma glucose levels for diabetic patients. Podiatrists are also inquiring on which probiotics and what concentration is optimal for these results.

As of now, the study shows great promise in how probiotics can aid in diabetic ulcer healing however, it is important for the both the physician and the patient to be aware of the benefits and downfalls associated with consuming probiotics. Diabetics should also be aware that probiotics can reduce blood sugars and may have to adjust other medications accordingly. Lastly, more research and studies with a bigger group should be done before probiotics can be confirmed to healing diabetic foot ulcers however, the research looks promising.
