Dr. Joseph Caporusso is a podiatrist in McAllen. He states, "Probably 75 percent of our patients here have diabetes and have some type of foot problem. Diabetes affects the circulation and nerves. These people’s feet are so numb, they could step on a nail, go right through their shoe and have no realization that they have something going on in their shoe until they see the blood on the floor. Not all patients have to undergo an amputation. Statistics showed 75 to 80 percent of the ulcers that don’t heal are at risk of being amputated. I want to slow down the complication rate. We’re trying to slow down the amount of people that get an amputation because of diabetes and because of non-healing ulceration."

At our Toronto foot clinic, Academy Foot and Orthotic Clinics we treat many diabetic patients with great success.  It is one of the practice areas that we focus on.  Our mission is to reduce the number of foot amputations.  Last year in Ontario over 1700 patients had their foot amputated due to diabetes complications.  The sad part of this disturbing statistic is that 85% of these amputations occured needlesly as these patients did not obtain the necessary foot care.  That is where we come in.
