Moles or freckles that change in size or shape need to be examined. "They can be big, little, growing, coming up," said Dr. James Koon, a podiatrist with Cypress Podiatry Associates in Winter Haven. "Melanoma can be several colors within the same lesion." People are becoming more attuned to worrying about dark-colored spots. The discoloration could be white, Koon said, and some cancers aren't discolored at all.

Remember the letters in finding suspicious moles: A for asymmetry, B for (irregular) border, C for (different or varied) colors, D for diameter greater than one-fourth inch, E for elevated, F for firm to the touch and G for growing. Skin cancers usually are asymmetrical, Koon said.
