It's difficult to recommend specific shoes for runners, since trying on running shoes is a trial-and-error process, said Dr. Ron Kane, a podiatrist at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. He suggests trying on shoes later in the day when your feet are more swollen. "Something that's going to be too tight is not going to be helpful," Kane said, adding that it's important to try on the left and the right shoe in a pair.

If you feel pain in your feet, Kane said, it's important to immediately visit a podiatrist to avoid further injury. "Runners notoriously have a different mentality and feel like it will get better on its own, but unfortunately it might be necessary for them to take time off," Kane said. He suggests the 10 percent rule: every week, increase your mileage by no more than 10 percent to avoid overuse injuries.
