“Over the past decade, thiamine, vitamin B1, and replacement therapy with benfotiamine have revolutionized the treatment of polyneuropathy. Although many factors contribute to diabetic polyneuropathy, thiamine deficiency, as evidenced by the well-documented beneficial therapeutic effects of benfotiamine, plays a predominant role in this, the most common of diabetic complications,” said Richard H. Mann, DPM, Chief Scientific Officer and Founder of Realm Labs®, the Makers of the NeuRemedy® line of benfotiamine supplements.

Recent research suggests that diabetics being treated with metformin are at even greater risk of being thiamine deficient than other diabetics. A 2015 study published in the journal Molecular Pharmacology found that metformin inhibited the thiamine transporter THTR2, decreasing intestinal absorption of thiamine. Thus metformin, a well-known cause of impaired vitamin B12 absorption, also impairs vitamin B1 absorption.
