According to podiatrist Louis DeCaro, DPM, "Growing pains is a common diagnose in the lower extremity of kids. I have a problem with the term growing pains. It is something that can happen in any part of a child's life. They can't play sports, they can't run, they can't do anything without pain. It actually comes from the mechanics of the way their feet are moving and can cause pain higher up in their bodies."

"What we like to do is to screen kids as to how they walk and their foot structure and foot type. Often, we can make adjustments in their shoe with an orthotic device to change the mechanics, and thus address the problem that is causing their pain. Shin splints are a good example as well as kids who cramp up after sports or kids who can't sleep at night because they are getting leg pain," says Dr. DeCaro.
