"Falls are the number one leading cause of death in the elderly," says podiatrist Dr. Kimberly Eickmeier of the Eickmeier Foot and Ankle Clinic. "Nearly half of the seniors who fall have a fracture and have a reduced activity level. Forty percent of nursing home patients will have a fall, which is quite devastating, and they will have complications which may lead to death."

To prevent falls, "there is a ankle brace that we can have them fitted for. It is low profile and thin, and fits under the pants. It helps get their balance back. It gives the nerves in their lower extremity feedback to their brain to redevelop their balance," says Eickmeier.
