Podiatrist Dr. Thomas G. Guglielmo, a Monroe resident with practices in Newtown and New Milford, said he frequently sees the results of putting multiple demands upon one’s feet. As people get older, they begin to develop problems with balance. Some of the factors that may cause seniors to lose their balance and fall are low blood sugar, not being familiar with their environment, vision problems, obesity, and old injuries that haven’t healed properly.

By providing ways to keep people steady on their feet, Guglielmo helps his patients to stay active as long as possible. He pointed out to his audience of 50 seniors at the Monroe center that 25% of those who fall after the age 65 will never fully recover. “Lots of things can be done to improve our balance,” Guglielmo said. To many of his patients, he suggests using a cane. Guglielmo also advises seniors to know where throw rugs are and to be careful walking over and around them. He encourages the use of hand rails.
