Dr. Annemarie Edwards, a podiatrist with the Intermountain Holladay Clinic tells Channel 2 News about the connection, complications, and treatment for foot problems in diabetics. "What I usually tell my diabetic patients is to make sure that they check their feet every day. One of the complications of diabetes is diabetic neuropathy. I also tell patients to check their shoes for foreign objects. I actually had a patient who was walking around with a mouse in his shoe," says Edwards.

"Usually diabetic patients come in with numbness, tingling, burning or pain in their feet. Sometimes they present with sores that do not heal. We test them, and sometimes we are the first to diagnose them as diabetics. The sad part is that there are currently 7 million undiagnosed diabetics in America. If they are not treated early enough, amputations can result," says Edwards.
